The Design Process standard for
over 25 years.

The first author’s book, “The Mechanical Design Process,” has been used widely since 1992 and is in its 6th edition. The second author leads a major mechanical engineering program at a research university, and the third has a highly subscribed web channel on practical design methods.

David G. Ullman is a founder of the Design Theory and Methodology (DTM) Committee. His book, “The Mechanical Design Process,” has been used widely since 1992 and is in its 6th edition. While retired from academia, he is an active researcher and product designer. He has founded two companies to manufacture products he designed, one mechanical and other an early AI application. He hold seven patents the most recent for electric airplanes. He consults with product developers training them in the use of the best practices.

Joshua D. Summers is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education at the University of Texas at Dallas.  He was formerly a Professor at Clemson University (2002-2020).  Dr. Summers’ research has been funded by government, large industry, and small-medium sized enterprises.  His areas of interest include collaborative design, knowledge management, and design enabler development with the overall objective of improving design through collaboration and computation.  Eleven of his former advisees are faculty, teaching engineering design based on what they learned from Dr. Summers.

Jeremy is a self-trained engineer with the simple goal of drawing people to engineering with amazing projects; Inspire them with ideas; Then teach them how to do it.

He is fascinated with all things mechanical, but most of his projects require electronics, motors, and programming.
